Magazine newsstand task

The images above show us magazines of different types arranged on  bookshelves. As seen in the images, the magazines are placed in a neat and pleasant order to catch the customer’s eye. Also the magazines are placed in such a way that you can see the mastheads clearly, This is a smart way to make money because even for some people, looking at the masthead will attract them to buy the magazine. The magazines are not stacked on top of each other but rather placed on the shelves individually. The more attractive and eye-catching covers of the magazine are placed in front of the other magazines and the top shelves. Usually, shops at sell magazines have copies of the same magazine following each other on shelves so that other customers can get hold of the same magazine and so that there isn’t a limited supply of magazines.

Distribution of magazines:

Every Magazine has a publisher for example the publisher of XXL magazine is Harris publications. These publishers decide what they want in the magazine and even create it.Newsagents or supermarkets are the main shops that sell magazines. Newsstands use the sale or return system and any copies not sold are returned to the distributor with no cost to the retailer and this was beneficial to the retailer because no wastage or risk is involved but however it is a very wasteful and environmentally damaging system for the publisher.

Another distribution method is giving out free issues which are normally given out at stations and other public places .Regular readers of the magazine can either have the magazine posted to them usually at a discount and this encourages the audience to buy more and more magazines. Others prefer electronic distribution and these are delivered to the customer’s inbox or tablet.

Some magazines are ezines which are online magazines and they are free and usually have video clips and hyperlinks that can direct the audience to another source. The benefits of this is that it is cheaper, saves transportation cost ,saves ink and paper as it doesn’t have to be printed out. Now, most magazines extend their brands with social networks like Facebook and twitter through advertisements.

Audience feedback and evaluation for my college magazine

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FOR MY COLLEGE MAGAZINE

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FOR MY COLLEGE MAGAZINE
What areas of my contents page and cover do you find attractive and how do you find my college magazine as a whole?

  •          The cover of the magazine looks professional because the layout of the magazine is well-laid out and the font of the text is consistent.
  •         The cover of the magazine is inviting due to its colourful features.
  •         The layout of both the content page and cover is organised, clear and consistent.

  •          The text on the contents page is well-spaced.
  •          It’s well-presented.
  •         Used certain colours like pink to accentuate important parts of the magazine like ‘EXCLUSIVE’
  •          The font is bright so stands out from the image on both the contents page and cover.
  •      What do you think I need to improve on?
  •          The font should be a bit bigger
  •          There is a colour clash because some of the colours are too bright making it difficult to see the text.
  •          Both text could have been the same colour on the contents page to ensure proper consistency.

EVALUATION OF MY PRELIMINARY MAGAZINE
The images I took came out clear and was of good quality because I used the college’s camera and it had good pixels compared to if I had used my phone. I took a medium shot for my front cover because it allows you to capture body language for example hand gestures and shrugs which the close up doesn't allow you to capture however when I was fitting the image in my cover using Photoshop, I had to crop it again meaning I didn’t take my medium short properly because of the angle at which I was holding the camera.

Photoshop was a bit difficult to use because it was my first time but with my teacher’s guidance and help from friends who had used photo shop before using Photoshop got easier. Because my target audience is students, I took images of two students, one to use for my cover and the other to use for my contents page. I used the rulers in Photoshop to give my cover margins to prevent any text I typed and images I put from coming out of the cover in case I printed it.

I gave the font on my cover some effects to make it glow and to make it stand out. Enlarging my font on the cover made it easier and clearer to see , simultaneously making sure my coverlines were well-spaced and readable .I also had to make sure I thought of appropriate coverlines for my cover, though it was easy, I had be careful I didn’t deviate as it was my first time making a magazine cover. Some of my cover lines were ‘Students get top results and culture day’

The reason why I chose these cover lines for my front cover is because it would make most students curious to read the magazine as they would like to know the results of their college .Also, since Leyton Sixth Form College has a range of cultures and people in the school, therefore it would make students anxious to know how Culture Day was celebrated. I made my masthead the biggest so that it spells out the purpose of my magazine. I used InDesign to create my contents page and it was much easier using it than the first time I used it for my article on filesharing because I had had an experience in using it. The text on my contents page were bold and in upper case so that every point is emphasised upon and so that it is clear to see as well. I outlined each text on my content page with a different colour to make it stand out against the background of the contents page so it is eye-catching and mostly to make my contents page attractive.

I need to improve on taking correct shots for example though  I took a medium shot for my magazine, I didn’t take it properly and still had to crop out a bit of the image. During my feedback, most people told me that some of the text was hard to read because of how small it was so I need to make the text bigger next time for it to be readable and clear. Finally, I need to make sure the colours I use for my text are not too colourful so it doesn’t create a colour clash and makes it easier to read. Also, I could have taken more images of students to make my magazine look more like a student magazine meaning I didn’t put much time into planning my college magazine so I need to work on my time management.

DEVELOPMENTS WHEN CREATING MY MUSIC MAGAZINE (main task)
·         Learn to take the right shots: I need to decide what type of shot I would want for my music magazine and also learn how to take these shots properly ;if possible ask the teacher to teach me how to.

·         Work on making the text bigger: I need to make sure my text is big enough to read without any difficulties and also I need to make sure the font size is consistent throughout so that it makes my magazine neat and presentable.

·         Choosing right colours for my text: I need to choose the right colours to use to make my magazine attractive, though colourful, it shouldn’t be over colourful so that my text can be clear and bold.
·
Time: I need to manage my time properly when planning my music magazine.

Evaluation of my article on filesharing

                                              EVALUATION

I researched from mainly the internet .I looked at a few music magazines online to give me ideas and chose to write an article for Billboard magazine but I could have done more research by looking at more music magazines to make my knowledge broader on the task I was given.I made sure I included paragraphs in my article for clarification and also to introduce a new point so it makes it easy for readers as well. I also made sure I punctuated my article to make reading very easy. Additionally, I used discourse markers such as ‘Furthermore’ to also introduce a new point and to also emphasise on that point. I could have used more punctuations like semi-colons and exclamation marks so that no one will have difficulties when reading my article.

The InDesign application was very good. It helped organised my article in a presentable and neat form because I was able to divide my article into columns. I could make my topic bold and easy to read. I was able to put colour into the background of my article to make it attractive and reduce any dull effects. I could also change the font size and could also change the font style. I haven’t used In-Design before so using it for the first time was a bit stressful because it was a bit complicated since I had to know what every tool was used for but in the end it helped me create a good article.I had to make a Google account because I didn’t have one but that was pretty easy because I’ve made an email account before. The reason why I needed to make this account was because I needed to make a blog .At first, I was having problems creating my blog. I tried it a number of times and it didn’t work, that was so frustrating! But again, in the end I was able to create my blog and upload my article on there and uploading the article was quite easy compared to creating the blog because my article uploaded as soon as I did it.

The audience feedback was helpful because it helped me change a few things in my article my audience pointed out like the colour of my article was too dull so I changed it and after the audience feedback it made me more confident that I had done quite a good article. My targets to improve my article is to next time use more punctuations and ask for help if I didn’t know how to do something.
